Personal Opinions

Hi, We are Chenney and Lucy and we would like to address the issue of college athletes’ payment.  We would like to take a stance that we are against the payment of college athletes. Compared to average academic students, college athletes, most with some type of scholarship, are better off than most of the other students, in terms of paying for food, tuition, textbooks, room, and more. We are personally addressing our feelings that we feel sympathy more for the average scholars than their athletic counterparts because we are working towards a future utilizing academics, and we do not have a deep passion and talent, being so fanatical for it. However, people who get dropped out of failure for college get less sympathy than college athletes who complete “more arduous physical work and have more devotion for the sport and college that they play for”. This is our personal opinion of the current issue on college athletes. I must add that being a college athlete is a privilege not a job. Professionals get paid because that is their actual career. Therefore college athletes should not be paid because it is not their actual job. They are more highly privileged than other people and basically having a scholarship is like getting paid. A regular sports scholarship is about 800,000 dollars! Those scholarships are more than a doctors’ salary in a year! We think that a sports scholarship that is more than one of the highest paid jobs is ridiculous.  I think that it would only be right if money goes to more educational purposes than individual beings. College athletes are in college to prove themselves so they can get drafted to be pros so why should they be getting paid in college? Most good schools already have sponsors so if they get paid they will lose motivation. What would they do with the money? Should players that are so good or devoted that they deserved to be paid be paid in college when they can be pros? All in all, college athletes should not be paid in college because we feel that they are already more prioritized than normal scholars in society.

Hi, this is Sarah Kim and Josephina Shin. We believe that college athletes should get paid for their hard work and dedication to their school and sport. They have taken valuable time out of their day just to play these sports, even with all the workload in college. They are also at a high risk of severe injury from playing their sports. Let’s say that a college football player gets a concussion when playing a game against another school. When they go to the hospital, who is responsible for paying the hospital bill? Will the college be responsible for the athlete’s state of health? Colleges should be able to cover the bill and care for any college athlete’s injury from playing a sport.

Also since they work hard to build the school spirt by playing in games and representing their school, they should be rewarded for their strong effort. Another reason why they should get paid is because they are the reason why the college earns a tremendous amount of money after playing in the event. If you look at it this way, the athletes are basically the base of the college’s school spirit and reputation. If the college does begin to pay the athletes for playing for them, the athletes can yearn to try harder after receiving a reward. Some people would not pay them because they may use it to do unethical actions such as buying drugs and gambling. However, it is their choice in how they spend their money. Think about it –if you work hard and get your pay, you too have the choice in how to spend your own money.

Yes, we understand that some of you are thinking that student athletes already receive scholarships for college that supply them all of the necessities and luxuries in college. You might argue that the athletes don’t need to be paid more if most of them attend college with scholarships. That is obviously true, but athletes already got their “reward” for being scholar athletes in high school –the scholarship. On the other hand, the money given by the college is the reward for the active work in college, not high school. The continuous, rigorous training and dedication to the sport should be rewarded to improve their skills for the future.

Many Americans, including us, are supporting that college athletes should get paid for their diligence and devotion to their sport. They risk their health because of the possible injuries related to sports. Plus, they deserve a reward for working themselves to represent the college.

Hey! My name is Daniel! Should college athletes be paid? My personal opinion is no. Even though I can see why people would want to be paid to play sports at the college level, I believe there is more reasoning and stronger points for the opposing side. And yes, of course everyone wants money, but what are the athletes complaining about? They already get all the money that they need. Most of the people who are in college all have scholarships to help pay for their tuitions, fees, etc. Also, they are the ones who have agreed to play in the first place because that was the path that they chose to take. If someone decided to major in music or art, shouldn’t they get paid as well? With this in mind, the college would have to pay all of their students, and they will not be able to afford to do so. The athletes should just play for their own benefit and enjoyment and have fun with it like all of the other career paths that are open to college students. Instead of making this a big issue, I believe that the athletes should just do what they do best and enjoy most and move on. Now, let’s look at this topic from another person’s point of view!

Hello, my name is Nathan Kim and I will be explaining why college athletes should get paid. You may think that paying college athletes is bad, but do you realize that these athletes work their butts off trying to win? Not only that, but also think about the whole picture. Many athletes get injured while playing sports and that can happen to the college athletes themselves. If these athletes win, it represents their college and gives them a good reputation. From that reputation, a college can get a lot more money from more students. From that money, the college should be able to pay for the college athletes instead of using it all on educational purposes. Yeah, yeah, you might say that it’s not fair for the people that invest their time in education instead of athletics. But that’s why colleges should pay athletes more. These athletes are unique. They are the only ones that were able to make it on the college team. Okay, think about this. Imagine you are a college athlete and you’re doing something that you are good at. Now, imagine that you don’t get paid for everything that you did for the college. How would you feel? Personally, I would feel bad because I’m basically an employee for the college. I’m working for them and making them money and I don’t even get paid a single penny. To me, that just doesn’t seem logical. Also, the college can also benefit from paying the athletes. Many other athletes that want to get paid would come to this college that pays their athletes. This would give the college more money than normal. So, that is my stance on if college athletes should be paid or not. Thanks for reading!
